On the Mountain Before Sunrise
An insider tip that happens only once a year: The first gondola heads up the mountain at sunrise—this year as early as 4:40 a.m.
Outside, the gondola supports glowed in the darkness—the “Katrin ” constellation, as seen from Bad Ischl in the direction of Katrin . The Wildenstein ruins and the Katrin summit cross are also illuminated this night—a scene that blends seamlessly into Bad Ischl’s nighttime cityscape. Far below: the 10,000 lights of the imperial city at night. Also on board: Christina Herbst from ExcitingFit, the yoga instructor who has been guiding hikes up the mountain for years. A glimpse of the breakfast buffet at the “ Katrin ” mountain inn whetted our appetite for more even before the hike to the summit cross.
What Awaits at the Summit
We continued on toward the summit cross, using our headlamps. There, we waited with bated breath—for 6:25 a.m.
At 6:30 a.m., we were treated to a beautiful view from the “Ischl-Blick” observation deck. Shortly afterward, the Gamsrudel herd appeared on the “ Katrin ” cliff face—a very special morning greeting. During yoga on the “ Katrin ” plateau, the first hands were already reaching toward the sky for the sun salutation. And of course: summit photos, the kind you rarely get to take so early in the morning.
To round off the morning, we had breakfast at the mountain inn, with a view of the Dachstein.
This is how a morning begins at the Katrin. And this moment happens more often than you might think—you just have to come up there.
